Trenton Doyle Hancock’s two-part exhibition Something American at James Cohan’s Tribeca and Lower East Side locations was an impressive, arresting, and inventive entryway into the artist’s mind: a tumultuous world of conflict and resolution.

Brazilian artist Gustavo Prado makes simple materials work for him in increasingly inventive ways. His sculptures, incorporating multiple mirrored elements, split apart the self and question contemporary society’s self-obsessed culture, while individual works’ varied configurations and finishes give off a unique vibe.

New York-based artist Aaron Johnson creates raw story-like tableaus, paintings that feature humans and creatures stuck in extreme narratives, and more recently canvases and standalone sculptures built-up with layers of painted socks. His highly-detailed, fantastical aesthetic with jarring colors consistently pushes the limits of decorum.
