Livin’ the Dream (Crying on the Inside)
Irena Jurek and Chelsea Seltzer Closing May 22
If you blink tomorrow, you will miss Livin’ the Dream (Crying on the Inside), a three-day, two-person show at DCTV. Irena Jurek and Chelsea Seltzer’s work crosses the thin line between painting to sculpture and back again.
I was wowed by the large-scale work, Bathed by the blithe air, and uplifted into infinite space. This is a piece that can consume the viewer. Stand before it and get lost.
Chelsea Seltzer’s paintings seem more understated at first glance, but with closer observation, extend beyond the two-dimensional picture plane. At times Seltzers works have sculptural moments such as in Strange Magic, a dismembered hand, guitar and creepy pelt of fur protrude from the canvas as possible fetishes that hold unknown power. In Cave Painting, the sculptural element lies within the oil as a dark element permeates protruding stalactites & stalagmites.
Irena Jurek has an upcoming solo show at Romeo in NYC, as well as a forthcoming solo show at David Shelton Gallery in Houston, Texas. She has shown with Jeff Bailey Gallery in Hudson , and Zurcher Gallery in Paris. Her work has been included in group exhibitions in New York at 247365, Know More Games, Denny Gallery, and others.
