“Mi casa es su casa:” Bienvenidos a Armory 2022
by Ruben Natal-San Miguel
The curatorial programming at The Armory Show 2022 was overseen by specialists in Latin American art for the first time in its four-decade history.
This edition of the flagship art fair featured over 240 galleries from more than 30 countries, as well as a Focus Section on Latin American art.
“The focus on Latin America reflects the diverse population in New York City and the significant Latin American population of the city,” said Nicole Berry, director. “Examining this growing market and talent that’s coming from this region was something we were very interested in.”
For this year’s exhibition, fine art photographer & independent curator Ruben Natal-San Miguel highlights four of the most dynamic established and emerging Latin American artists and artists of Latin descent on display throughout the fair this past week.
Joiri Minaya at Calderón
Minaya’s works often reflect on how non-Latin people perceive the Caribbean landscape, specifically that of the Dominican Republican from where the artist originated, and what their misconceptions and perceptions mean for those who actually inhabit it. Two untitled photographic mixed media examples from her ongoing Divergences series are hung over a printed wallpaper showing lush impressionistic greenery; Minaya photographed mid-century wallpaper and then digitally altered it in Photoshop to create a non-repeating pattern that seems to glitch. The final effect appears decorative, yet is full of culturally relevant meaning.
Lucia Hierro at Charlie James Gallery Los Angeles, CA.
Lucia Hierro, a Dominican American multimedia artist, is known for soft-assemblage, painting, sculpture, and digital media collages that represent the intersectionality between Dominican American identity, capitalism, and community through a culturally relevant lens.

Larrisa De Jesus Negrón at Art For Change
Larissa De Jesús Negrón is a multidisciplinary artist who yearns for introspection and finds self-evaluation through her intimate and often otherworldly spaces and portraits. Her stylistically varied and neo-surrealist imagery is linked to the artist’s curiosity of the subconscious and psychoanalysis. Through her work, Larissa has a profound interest in healing and addressing her childhood and adult trauma.
