Amidst a heightened carnival-esque atmosphere at the Museum of Sex, with its newly installed SuperFunLand interactive installation and glitzy yet text-heavy Cam Life and Stag: The Illicit Origins of Pornographic Film shows, is a sobering gem of an exhibition. On Abortion and the Repercussions of Lack of Access deploys text viscerally, connecting us to real women’s abortion stories.

I had the pleasure of meeting Betty and discovering her work through two group shows we were in this past year, Smile at Shin Gallery’s Project Space and Beyond Secretary at Mark Borghi Fine Arts, both curated by Jenny Mushkin Goldman. The fact that I was unaware of this genius either proved to be a lapse in my art world intelligence or demonstrated something ubiquitous to Betty’s career. Betty has been fighting a long-game battle against both censorship and society’s expectations.

The sixth version of SPRING/BREAK Art Show outgrew its former location at the James A. Farley Post Office and currently occupies the 22nd and 23rd floor of the former Conde Nast building at 4 Times Square.

Wandering the aisles at VOLTA NY can be compared to browsing the racks at your local upmarket thrift shop: every now and then an Armani jacket catches your eye among the Merona sweaters. This year’s edition was no different. 

September 11th seems like a strange date to schedule an art event. A dark cloud will always hang over that date in this country, especially in New York City. I spent it in the most patriotic way that I could think of. I joined a group of artists and friends at Freight + Volume gallery for the closing reception of Rebecca Goyette’s exhibition, Ghost Bitch USA.
